The University of West Florida: An Excellent Choice for Aruban Students
ORANJESTAD – The government of Aruba actively collaborates with various universities and colleges in the United States. This partnership aims to provide affordable education options for Aruban students. Recently, Aruba signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of West Florida (UWF) in Pensacola.
Why Choose the University of West Florida?
An Affordable Option for Aruban Students
The University of West Florida is part of the State University System of Florida, which includes twelve other public colleges. Among them is the University of Central Florida in Orlando, known for having many Aruban graduates. Currently, two professors from Aruba teach at UWF, showcasing the strong ties between Aruba and this institution.
Renowned Programs at UWF
UWF offers various fields of study, including underwater archaeology, marine biology, and environmental science. Moreover, the university provides degrees in hospitality, MBA, and finance. Students can also participate in a range of sports programs, such as baseball, tennis, swimming, and cross-country running. UWF competes in NCAA Division II, allowing student-athletes to grow in a competitive environment.
Significant Tuition Benefits for Aruban Students
The MoU between the Government of Aruba and UWF significantly reduces tuition for Aruban students. Those with a GPA of at least 2.75 can enjoy a 66% discount on international student tuition rates. Essentially, Aruban students pay the same tuition as Florida residents. Additionally, they receive an automatic USD 500 scholarship each semester. If students maintain strong academic performance, they may qualify for more merit-based scholarships.
Pensacola: A Hidden Gem for Education
Discovering Pensacola, Florida
Many Arubans may not be familiar with Pensacola, located in the Florida Panhandle. While cities like Miami, Orlando, and Tampa are more well-known, Pensacola offers a unique coastal charm. The city is safe, quiet, and revolves around a lifestyle connected to the sea and nature, making it an appealing place for Aruban students.
Ongoing Collaborations and Future Plans
The Minister Plenipotentiary is engaged in discussions with various U.S. colleges and universities that have an MoU with Aruba. By 2025, the focus will shift toward expanding collaborations with colleges in Canada. UWF has expressed a keen interest in Aruba as well. Rachel Hendrix, Executive Director of UWF’s Office of International Affairs, noted their desire to establish an exchange program, particularly with the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality at the Aruban students University of West Florida.
Upcoming Event: Aruba College Fair
Minister Plenipotentiary Zulema Dabian-Erasmus encourages parents and students to attend the Aruba College Fair on November 8 and 9, 2024, at the Renaissance Convention Center. This event will help attendees learn about the American educational system and empower them to consider studying in the U.S. For more details about the event.
