CUA Highlights Impact of Bank Fees on Aruba’s Prices

Aruba’s Consumers Union Aruba (CUA) recently raised concerns over rising bank fees affecting local businesses and consumers. With higher fees stemming from recent Mastercard Maestro changes, CUA warns that consumers may face increased product prices if businesses pass on these costs. To address these fees, CUA calls on Aruba’s government to act quickly, exploring solutions to lessen the financial burden on Aruba bank fee impact.

CUA’s Warning on Aruba Bank Fee Impact on Prices

The CUA recently held a press conference to address these fees, urging Aruba’s government and Central Bank to intervene. According to CUA Chairman Frans Ponson, businesses are alarmed at the growing bank fees, which could result in a 2% price increase on many goods. “With limited transparency on when or why banks raised fees, businesses and consumers feel the financial strain,” Ponson noted. The rising fees stem from Mastercard’s acquisition of Maestro, leading to additional charges for Aruba’s businesses.

Ponson encourages business owners to assess their bank expenses thoroughly and understand how these fees might affect their costs and ultimately impact their customers. “Do your research,” Ponson advises, suggesting that businesses carefully calculate costs for each bank card transaction.

Two Options for Aruba Businesses to Manage Rising Bank Fees

In response to rising fees, CUA suggests two possible solutions for Aruba businesses. One option is to raise prices by 2%, directly passing the cost increase to consumers. The alternative is to offer a 2% discount to customers who pay with cash, effectively bypassing bank card transaction fees.

Ponson explained, “Aruban retailers often need several card machines to avoid extra charges for customers using different banks.” He pointed out that this issue highlights the need for a unified, low-fee payment solution within Aruba. A simple, low-cost Aruba-based payment card, suggested by Ponson, could reduce reliance on costly international card systems while keeping online purchasing options available.

CUA Pushes for Government Intervention in Banking Costs

To address these escalating fees, CUA urges the Aruban government and the Central Bank of Aruba (CBA) to take action. Ponson argues that establishing a local Aruban payment card with affordable, fixed rates could benefit both businesses and consumers. Such a card could reduce transaction costs, safeguarding the public from further price hikes. CUA’s recommendation includes maintaining existing international card options to support online shopping while introducing a more economical local option for in-store purchases.

A similar issue occurred recently with Aruba’s gas stations, which temporarily stopped accepting bank card payments due to high fees. The solution involved raising fuel prices, ultimately passing costs back to consumers. This example, Ponson suggests, demonstrates the need for proactive government involvement to protect Aruba’s consumers from future hidden fees.
