1500 Caribbean Healthcare Professionals Receive Acute Care Training from Amsterdam UMC Academy

In a remarkable initiative, 1,500 Caribbean healthcare professionals have been trained in acute care over the past three years through the CARIBHA project, a collaboration between the Dutch Caribbean Hospital Alliance, Amsterdam UMC Academy, and the Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Sport.

Project Overview: CARIBHA Initiative:

In the past three years, the CARIBHA project has successfully trained 1,500 healthcare professionals across the Caribbean in acute care, thanks to the cooperation of the Amsterdam UMC Academy. This initiative was made possible through a collaboration involving the Dutch Caribbean Hospital Alliance (DCHA), Amsterdam UMC Academy, and the Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Sport (VWS). The project aims to enhance the skills and readiness of healthcare providers to handle acute care situations, including pandemic responses.

Training Components and Specializations:

The CARIBHA project, initiated in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, has provided extensive training to healthcare professionals, including caregivers and nurses, since 2021. The training program encompassed a wide range of task-oriented sessions, specifically targeting Covid care, Basic Acute Care Training (BAZ), clinical reasoning, and advanced training for ER, IC, CCU nurses, diabetes nurses, and nurse anesthetists.

Collaborative Efforts and Funding:

Involved Organizations and Goals:

The Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Sport commissioned the CARIBHA project during the Covid-19 pandemic, supporting it with a subsidy exceeding 2 million euros. The collaborative efforts between hospitals in Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, St. Eustatius, St. Maarten, and Saba, along with the Amsterdam UMC Academy, significantly bolstered the quality of care in the Caribbean region.

Impact on Caribbean Healthcare:

Enhanced Professional Development and Care Quality:

This comprehensive training initiative has not only improved acute care capabilities but also enhanced the professional development and employability of healthcare providers across the Caribbean. The project underscores the importance of sustainable collaboration and continuous training to maintain high standards of healthcare.
