September: Alzheimer’s Awareness Month and Global Alzheimer’s Day

Throughout September, we observe Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, highlighting the importance of understanding Alzheimer’s disease. Specifically, September 21 is celebrated as Global Alzheimer’s Day, an initiative led by the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise awareness about this condition and its societal and health impacts.

Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive and degenerative brain disorder that leads to memory loss, impaired thinking, and behavioral changes. Recognized as the most common form of dementia, its exact cause remains unknown. The disease generally progresses through three stages:

Early Stage

In the early stage, which lasts about three years, individuals experience gradual memory deterioration. People may forget recent events, even if they occurred just 10, 15, or 20 minutes prior.

Middle Stage

During the middle stage, memory issues become more pronounced. Language problems, impaired functions, and difficulties in recognition start to emerge.

Late Stage

In the late stage, there is significant cognitive decline. Symptoms include increased muscle rigidity, difficulty adjusting posture, and potential seizures. The overall deterioration affects every intellectual function.

Current Treatments and Prevention

Currently, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease. However, reducing the risk is possible through regular physical activity and a healthy diet. Aim for at least 150 minutes of exercise per week and consume a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, while limiting saturated fats.

Support from Alzheimer’s Foundation Aruba

In support of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, the Alzheimer’s Foundation Aruba is celebrating its 21st anniversary with its “Teal Week” from September 21 to 29. This initiative aims to spread awareness and provide support for those affected by Alzheimer’s.

According to President Melva Croes-Yanez, the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s can often lead to isolation and a lack of dignity for patients. The goal is to foster a more compassionate approach, ensuring patients receive care that respects their dignity.

The Impact of Alzheimer’s on Individuals and Families

Alzheimer’s disease profoundly affects not only those diagnosed but also their families and loved ones. It challenges the very essence of who a person is, impacting their memories, experiences, and personal identity.

Get Involved and Support the Cause

You can make a difference by participating in awareness activities and supporting organizations like the Alzheimer’s Foundation Aruba. Every effort helps to advance research and provide care for those affected by this challenging disease.
