1,227 Retirees No Longer Need to File Income Tax Returns

The Tax Department (DIMP) recently announced that 1,227 retirees are no longer required to file income tax returns for the 2023 tax year. This decision affects retirees whose sole source of income is the SVB Aruba old-age pension.

Who Qualifies for the Retirees Income Tax Exemption?

The Tax Department reviewed the 2021 income tax returns and found that certain retirees meet the criteria for tax exemption. These retirees include individuals and married couples whose combined annual income is below AFL 30,000 and who receive no additional income besides the SVB Aruba old-age pension.

Retirees who qualify for this income tax exemption will not receive income tax return forms for 2023. Their spouses, if they also meet the conditions, are included in this exemption. Over the next few days, these retirees will receive an official letter from the Tax Department, explaining their updated tax status.

What Happens If Income Changes?

If, in the future, a retiree or their spouse starts receiving other sources of income besides the SVB Aruba pension, it will be necessary to contact the Tax Department. This could include additional pension funds from previous employment or rental income. The department will then evaluate whether the individual must be re-registered for income tax purposes.

It is important to note that not all retirees are exempt. Those with additional income, such as a pension from a former job or rental property income, must continue to file their annual tax returns.

Retirees with Additional Income Still Required to File Taxes

Retirees who receive other income beyond the old-age pension from SVB Aruba, such as a pension from a former employer in Aruba or another country, or income from rental properties, will still need to submit their income tax returns each year. The Tax Department will continue to assess their taxable income to ensure compliance with Aruba’s tax regulations.

For further details or questions about this retirees income tax exemption, individuals can contact the Tax Department directly at 522 7423 or 522 7424.
