Building Resilient Brands: Strategic Communication, PR, and Sustainability
The Department of Economic Affairs, Commerce, and Industry, through its Aruba Business Development Initiative (IDEA), hosted a highly informative and engaging titled “Building Resilient Brands Workshop: Strategic Communication, Public Relations, and Sustainability in Action” on November 22, 2024. This event brought together 20 participants eager to deepen their understanding of brand resilience and effective communication.

Strategic Communication & Public Relations
The workshop opened with Ghislaine de Windt, a marketing and public relations expert currently at Tierra del Sol Resort & Golf by Iberostar, leading an in-depth session on public relations and strategic communication. Key topics included:
- Introduction to PR & Communication: Understanding what PR is, why it’s essential for businesses, and examples of effective PR.
- PR Strategies vs. PR Campaigns: Differentiating between long-term strategies and short-term campaigns.
- Types of Media and Audiences: Identifying media types and understanding how to communicate with various audiences.
- PR Key Metrics: Measuring the success of PR efforts.
- Implementing PR Strategies: How to create PR plans that attract potential clients, enhance brand visibility, and build communities.
- Driving Website Traffic: Using PR to generate more visits to a business website.
- Crisis Management: Engaging in practical scenarios to discuss handling crisis situations.
- Press Releases and Storytelling: Writing press releases and creating compelling stories to strengthen brand authority.
The session concluded with a quiz to test participants’ understanding and a crisis management activity.
Sustainability in Action
Following the first session, Dae Hereira, a sustainability expert from Iberostar, delved into Aruba’s sustainability practices. The topics covered included:
- Sustainability Practices in Aruba: Examining waste management, agriculture, environmental efforts, transportation, community initiatives, and public awareness.
- Linear Economy Explained: Understanding the current economic model and its emphasis on disposal and waste.
- Recycling and Waste Management: Overview of Aruba’s recycling systems and practical tips for reducing, reusing, and recycling.
- Circular Economy: The importance of a circular economy and its components.
- Environmental Awareness: Encouraging participants to visit the Aruba Zero Waste website for further education.
Dae Hereira emphasized the importance of environmental responsibility and engaged the group with thought-provoking questions like, “Where does your sushi go after you’re done?”
Participant Engagement and Feedback
During and after the presentations, participants had the opportunity to ask questions and engage with the speakers. The feedback received was overwhelmingly positive, with participants noting that the content was both insightful and practical.
Upcoming Workshop: Kid$ BIZ Market
The final Building Resilient Brands Workshop for 2024 is the “Kid$ BIZ Market,” designed for children aged 9 to 11 years. This event will be held from December 18-20, 2024. Participation is free, and registration will open soon.
