Nathalie Maduro Elected as First President of Dutch Caribbean Agriculture Alliance
Nathalie Maduro directs the Department of Agriculture, Breeding, and Fisheries (LVV) in Aruba. Recently, they elected her as the first President of the Dutch Caribbean Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries Alliance (DCALFA). Her appointment marks a new era for agriculture, livestock, and fisheries in the region. Moreover, it emphasizes sustainable growth and youth involvement.
DCALFA, a cooperative platform, unites Aruba with Bonaire, Curaçao, Sint Eustatius, Saba, and Sint Maarten. Together, these islands address key issues like food security, environmental sustainability, and regional economic growth. Moreover, Maduro’s leadership reinforces a commitment to a resilient agricultural future for the Dutch Caribbean.
Dutch Caribbean Agriculture Alliance: A Platform for Progress
The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) developed DCALFA in March 2022 as part of the “Dutch Caribbean Visioning Process (DCVP).” Supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security, and Nature (LVVN), DCALFA’s primary goal is to strengthen collaboration across the islands. Through this platform, leaders strategically tackle key issues in agriculture, fishing, and livestock management, enhancing food security and economic stability in the Dutch Caribbean.
Visionary Leadership for a Sustainable Future
With Mrs. Maduro’s guidance, DCALFA will drive projects focused on sustainability, education, and local consumption. Her vision includes introducing agriculture in schools to spark young people’s interest and promoting sustainable, local food production. She believes the alliance can create a more resilient and sustainable food system that benefits both local economies and the environment.
In her words, “The future of our industry depends on the next generation of farmers, fishermen, and entrepreneurs.” She emphasizes DCALFA’s commitment to providing learning and participation opportunities for youth, including training programs and support for innovation.
Key Goals of DCALFA under Maduro’s Leadership
- Promote Sustainable Practices Across the Islands
The alliance seeks to support agriculture and fisheries on each island by promoting eco-friendly practices that protect the environment and strengthen local economies.
- Invest in Education and Training
DCALFA integrates agriculture education into school programs. This cultivates a generation of young people with skills and interest in agricultural careers.
- Strengthen Food Security and Local Consumption
DCALFA focuses on self-sufficiency. It encourages the islands to increase local food production and reduce dependency on imports. As a result, the region becomes more resilient to global changes.
Building Regional Cooperation and Growth
This strategic alliance strengthens ties across the Dutch Caribbean, uniting the islands to achieve shared goals in agriculture, livestock, and fisheries. Through DCALFA, the partnership will tackle challenges and pave the way for economic and environmental sustainability. Under Mrs. Maduro’s leadership, DCALFA aims to transform Dutch Caribbean agriculture into a model of resilience and sustainability.
