Modern Housing Initiatives for Seniors in Aruba

Modern housing is essential for ensuring a healthy and socially engaged life for seniors. In Aruba, there is a pressing need for adequate and modern housing for the elderly. To address this issue, the Government of Aruba is investing significantly in constructing new housing options tailored for seniors.

Government Investment in Senior Housing

The Government of Aruba has allocated a 20 million florin loan to the FCCA to support the construction of social housing, with at least 25% dedicated to senior residences. This investment aims to provide not just a house but a true home that fosters a supportive community and combats social isolation.

Creating a Social Environment

Modern housing for seniors is more than just a physical structure; it’s about creating a vibrant community. The new housing projects are designed to include social elements that help prevent isolation and promote mental well-being. This approach aligns with the Deltaplan’s focus on integrating mental health care with physical health.

Insights from the National Forum for Seniors

Housing for seniors was a major topic at the National Forum for Seniors held in October 2023. Gijsbert van Herk, Chairman of Staedion, shared valuable insights on senior housing management. Staedion, with its extensive experience managing over 40,000 homes in The Hague, provides a model for Aruba to follow, avoiding the need to reinvent the wheel.

Five Focus Areas for Senior Housing

Aruba’s approach to senior housing includes several key focus areas:

  1. Home Care Support: Strengthening support for those wishing to stay in their own homes.
  2. Care Home Services: Improving quality and services in existing care homes.
  3. Commercial Projects: Encouraging and facilitating new commercial housing projects.
  4. Expansion of Care Facilities: Developing plans to increase capacity in care homes.
  5. Daycare Facilities: Expanding projects like Pasadia to meet growing demand.
