Lower Airfare in the Caribbean: A Boost for Regional Travel

The Dutch Caribbean Cooperation of Airports (DCCA) is lowering airfare within the Caribbean by reducing passenger facility charges. This initiative aims to make travel more accessible and affordable, benefiting both residents and tourists.

The Dutch Caribbean Cooperation of Airports (DCCA) has announced a groundbreaking decision to reduce Passenger Facility Charges (PFC). The lowered fees will make travel between Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, and other Dutch-Caribbean islands more affordable.

What Does the Tariff Reduction Mean for Travelers?

Starting in January 2025, PFCs will drop to just $15 per passenger. This reduction applies to airlines such as Divi Divi Air, Z-Air, and Winair, ensuring more affordable ticket prices.

Key details include:

  • Phased implementation begins with Curaçao and Bonaire in January 2025.
  • Aruba follows in February 2025.
  • Dates for Sint Maarten’s reductions will be announced soon.

With the route between Aruba and Curaçao being a high-traffic corridor, travelers can expect the most significant savings here.

Driving Affordable and Sustainable Travel

The DCCA’s decision stems from a strategic plan launched in 2022. After conducting in-depth research on pricing flexibility and passenger demand, the organization recognized that lowering costs would stimulate travel.

During the 2023 DCCA Congress, research findings showed that reduced fares encouraged inter-island tourism and day trips, as seen in a successful pilot program between Sint Maarten and nearby islands Saba and Sint Eustatius.

Benefits Beyond Lower Costs

According to DCCA Chair and Curaçao Airport Partners CEO Jonny Andersen, “Airports are more than transit hubs. They are vital connections that bring our islands closer together.”

Lower airfare not only boosts tourism but also supports:

  • Economic Growth: Stimulating local economies through increased travel.
  • Stronger Regional Ties: Making inter-island visits more accessible for families and businesses.
  • Environmental Goals: Reducing the need for long-haul flights by promoting regional travel.

Collaboration Across Caribbean Airports

The DCCA consists of six airports within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, working together to enhance travel experiences. Barbara Brown, Chief Commercial Officer of Aruba Airport Authority, expressed enthusiasm:

“This initiative aligns with our goals of affordability, sustainability, and connectivity. We’re proud to support regional travel improvements.”
