The Horacio Oduber Hospital (HOH) in Oranjestad experienced a significant increase in emergency cases in August 2024. With a bed occupancy rate reaching 91%, up from 77% in July, the hospital managed an influx of patients, primarily due to medical emergencies.

Horacio Oduber Hospital Handles 91% Bed Occupancy

The Horacio Oduber Hospital saw a 91% bed occupancy rate in August, largely driven by an increase in emergency cases. Of the 808 patients admitted, 70% were brought in due to medical emergencies. This is almost identical to July’s 813 admissions, yet the severity of cases this month was noticeably higher. On average, patients stayed 4.7 days in the hospital, reflecting the serious nature of many of these emergency cases.

The hospital continues to release these statistics monthly to inform the public about its operations and the level of care provided. Despite the rise in emergency cases, HOH maintains a commitment to offering the highest quality healthcare to the community.

Emergency Room Surge at Horacio Oduber Hospital

The HOH Emergency Room saw an influx of 2,739 patients in August. However, 41% of these cases were non-emergencies and were referred to general practitioners or the Huisartsenpost (Doctor’s Post). The hospital’s ability to manage such a high volume of patients, while directing non-urgent cases elsewhere, highlights its efficiency in handling real emergencies.

Horacio Oduber Hospital Surgical and Radiology Services

In August, 574 surgeries were performed at Horacio Oduber Hospital, similar to the previous month’s count. Additionally, 4,412 radiology tests, such as CT scans and MRIs, were conducted. The HOH laboratory also ran approximately 16,000 tests, ensuring that all patients received timely diagnoses and treatments.

HOH specialists conducted over 7,000 consultations in August, underscoring the hospital’s extensive medical services. With a focus on providing top-quality care, the hospital continues to handle the growing healthcare needs of Aruba’s population.

Continued Commitment to Quality Care

In August, 69 babies were born at HOH, 36 boys and 33 girls, adding to the hospital’s monthly report of important medical events. The Blood Bank also recorded 179 donors, demonstrating the ongoing support of the community in contributing to the hospital’s operations.

HOH’s monthly updates serve as a crucial tool for keeping the public informed about its services and performance, reinforcing its role as the leading healthcare institution in Aruba.
