Fifth Edition of Gold Mine Walk & Run Focuses on Mental Health
The Gold Mine Walk & Run is back for its fifth edition, emphasizing the crucial link between physical activity and mental health. Scheduled for October 10, 2024, this year’s event will spotlight mental health awareness.
Highlighting Mental Health Awareness
Caroline Hart, Director of Fundacion Respaldo, explains that October 10 is World Mental Health Day. She emphasizes that Aruba’s stakeholders use this month to promote mental health awareness through various events. The goal is to help the Aruba community understand and engage with mental health topics more deeply for improved mental well-being.
In previous years, Fundacion Respaldo, along with FADA and Stichting Hunto, organized impactful events like “Let’s Art for Mental Health” and last year’s “Let’s Plant for Mental Health.” This year, the focus shifts to the benefits of physical activity for mental health.
The Impact of Physical Activity on Mental Health
Physical activity plays a vital role in mental health. Engaging in exercise not only keeps the body fit but also has significant mental health benefits. During physical exertion, the body releases endorphins, natural substances that enhance mood and reduce stress.
“Exercise helps alleviate anxiety and depression, two of the most common mental health issues today,” Hart notes. Additionally, regular physical activity improves sleep quality, which in turn helps manage daily stress more effectively. “It’s a natural way to boost energy and improve mood,” she adds.
Support from Local Organizations
Romyko Winklaar, Director of FADA, underscores the importance of these initiatives in raising awareness about mental health, a topic that has gained more focus in recent years, particularly following the pandemic.
“Our organization supports these efforts to bring awareness to mental health, and we value the collaboration with GGZ institutions that have significantly contributed to this cause,” Winklaar highlights.
Dalgis Montalvo, Director of Stichting Hunto, praises the collective effort to not only work together but also to demonstrate the commitment to mental health within the Aruba community. “This collaboration shows our dedication to mental health and helps the community recognize the work of GGZ institutions,” Montalvo says.
Event Details and Categories
The Gold Mine Walk & Run offers various categories for participants. The 5-kilometer category is open to everyone aged 17 and older, starting from Gold Mine. Additional categories include a 3-kilometer run for youth and a 1.5-kilometer run. For children, there are distances of 800, 400, and 200 meters.
The Importance of Staying Active
Hart concludes by emphasizing the importance of physical activity for mental health. “Exercise helps relax, clear the mind, and maintain a balanced body and mind. Regardless of the type of activity, staying active is crucial and should be part of daily life,” she asserts.
