DOW Launches irisGO Road Patrol Program in Aruba
On November 25, 2024, the Department of Public Works (DOW) launched the innovative irisGO program in Oranjestad. This new initiative marks a significant step forward in modernizing road inspections across the island. With this program, Aruba joins the forefront of using advanced technology for infrastructure management.
What is the irisGO Program?
irisGO is an advanced, automated road patrol system powered by artificial intelligence (AI). The system has been designed to inspect roads intelligently. It can identify a variety of conditions such as road surface quality, sidewalks, potholes, graffiti, and objects that obstruct traffic. To achieve this, the program uses a camera system installed in a vehicle, which scans and collects data during patrols.
Why is irisGO Important for Aruba?
The government of Aruba has long been seeking effective ways to improve road conditions. To meet this goal, the DOW successfully secured a budget of 18 million florins annually, which is now part of the 2025 budget and is expected to continue in future budgets. By using irisGO, the DOW can better allocate resources and plan repairs, ultimately leading to safer and more efficient roads.
The Benefits of the irisGO Program
Aruba is the first country in the Caribbean to implement such an advanced system. This gives the island a leading edge in road maintenance and technology. Through the collection of valuable data, the irisGO system enables the DOW to schedule repairs and maintenance more effectively. As a result, the process becomes more organized and integrated into daily operations. Consequently, response times improve, and road conditions enhance, benefiting residents and visitors alike.
Support from Government Leaders
Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes commended the DOW for implementing such an innovative project. She noted that the initiative is crucial for the well-being of the island and reflects a commitment to staying current with modern technology. As a result, this project promises to strengthen road safety and infrastructure management for years to come.
