Aruba’s New 20 MW Temporary Power Plant Operational
WEB Aruba, in partnership with Bredenoord, recently finalized the setup of a 20 MW temporary power plant. The official handover took place on August 30, marking the plant’s operational launch. This new facility is crucial in addressing the island’s increasing electricity demand, particularly during maintenance periods or when renewable energy sources like wind and solar power fluctuate unexpectedly.
Addressing Surging Energy Demands in Aruba
Since May 2023, Aruba has experienced a significant rise in energy demand, driven by economic growth, tourism, and climate change. This increase has placed additional strain on WEB Aruba’s existing RECIP engines. The temporary power plant will not only meet the immediate needs but also act as a backup during mandatory maintenance of the RECIP engines, ensuring continuous power supply.
Strategic Planning for Aruba’s Energy Future
During the ceremony, WEB Aruba’s Director Alfredo Koolman and Bredenoord’s Chief Commercial Officer Toon Bruining, alongside Aruba’s Minister of Labor, Energy, and Integration, Glenbert Croes, highlighted the importance of this project. Koolman emphasized that the global surge in energy demand necessitates forward-thinking solutions. Aruba’s energy peak is expected to reach 165 to 170 MW by September/October, making this temporary solution vital.
Beyond Temporary Solutions: Aruba’s Energy Strategy
While the 20 MW temporary power plant addresses short-term needs, WEB Aruba is also focusing on medium and long-term solutions. Plans include installing batteries for energy storage and expanding the existing RECIP 3 plant with two additional engines. Moreover, Aruba is set to urgently increase its renewable energy capacity to ensure a sustainable, reliable, and affordable energy future.
Collaboration and Rapid Implementation
The success of this project is a testament to the dedication of all employees and contractors involved. Constructing the temporary power plant in a record 40 days, from the agreement’s signing to its finalization, showcases the efficiency and commitment of the teams.
