Nigel Maduro representing Aruba at COP29 United Nations Climate Change Conference

Aruba’s Representation at COP29

Nigel Maduro, a dedicated environmental and climate conservation activist, has gained recognition for his advocacy for nature and sustainability. His selection by the Caribbean Climate Justice Leaders Academy to represent Aruba at COP29—United Nations Climate Change Conference—marks a significant achievement for both him and the island. This conference will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, and brings together global leaders to discuss critical climate issues.

Journey to Becoming an Environmental Advocate

In an interview with Bon Dia Aruba, Maduro shared his excitement about joining the Caribbean Climate Justice Leaders Academy, a program designed to empower young environmental defenders and community leaders in the Caribbean. This academy provides unique opportunities to learn about climate justice and engage with global policymakers to promote climate action.

Representing the Caribbean at COP29

Out of thousands of applicants, Maduro was one of 50 selected from different Caribbean islands, and he ranked in the top 8 students chosen to represent their nations at COP29, with all expenses covered. Maduro expressed the honor and privilege of attending, emphasizing how this opportunity will amplify his voice on international platforms. He noted that while his environmental advocacy in Aruba has sometimes been met with skepticism, representing Aruba at the United Nations will give him a recognized international platform to address climate change.

Building a Network for Climate Justice

Maduro’s expertise goes beyond attending conferences. He has established the Climate Justice Network, uniting climate advocates and socio-environmental defenders from the Dutch Caribbean. His work includes promoting climate adaptation and conservation in the region, raising awareness about the climate crisis in Aruba, and organizing sustainable socio-ecological development workshops. His peaceful protests, known as “Beach Parties,” are also part of his activism, blending community engagement with environmental education.

Raising Awareness Through Community Engagement

One of Maduro’s key initiatives is the Beach Party event, designed to unite the community and address environmental issues. These events are strategically held in front of hotels under construction on Sundays, symbolizing the locals’ reduced beach access due to tourism. The Beach Party includes sustainability workshops and waste management sessions, using music to attract participants. This peaceful protest aims to reclaim beaches for locals while also educating tourists about sustainability issues in Aruba.

Final Beach Party Before COP29

The next Beach Party, and the last before Maduro departs for COP29, will take place on Sunday, September 1, at Baby Beach starting at 11 AM. This event will be the largest peaceful protest yet, coinciding with the construction of the island’s largest hotel in the area. Maduro plans to focus on his preparations for the November conference after this event.

Community Reactions and Support

Maduro has received mixed reactions from the community—some support his efforts to protect nature and bring the community together, while others doubt the impact of his work. Despite the criticism, Maduro’s goal is to raise awareness and understanding about the environmental challenges facing Aruba.
