Aruba Airport Joins Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Network

Queen Beatrix International Airport (AUA) in Aruba proudly announces its official membership in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Network. This step significantly improves accessibility for disabled passengers and promotes a more inclusive airport environment. Now, the network helps individuals with invisible disabilities receive needed support while traveling, making AUA Airport welcoming for everyone.

What is the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Network?

passengers support

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Network is a global program that supports individuals with invisible disabilities. These may include cognitive, neurological, or neurodevelopmental disorders, along with other conditions that aren’t immediately visible but still impact a person’s comfort while traveling.

Currently, one in six people worldwide lives with a disability, affecting about 1.3 billion individuals. While some disabilities are visible, many remain hidden. The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative makes these hidden disabilities visible with a simple tool—the Sunflower lanyard. Airport staff recognize the Sunflower symbol and offer assistance to passengers who need it.

Launch of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program at AUA Airport

On October 25, 2024, AUA Airport officially launched the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program. This launch aligned with International Invisible Disability Awareness Week, highlighting the importance of inclusivity for individuals with hidden disabilities.

Notable figures attended the event, including Mrs. Maureen de Mooy-Schreuder, Ambassador of the Netherlands & Belgium, along with representatives from the Aruba Autism Foundation (FAA). During a special ceremony, Byron Lesire and Kay Quandus, ambassadors for the Aruba Autism Foundation, placed the first Hidden Disabilities Sunflower sticker at the security checkpoint. The event also featured sunflower cookie distribution to passengers and employees.

Aruba Airport’s Commitment to Inclusivity and Accessibility

Aruba Airport Authority N.V. has trained over 200 employees, including security staff, customer service representatives, and airport operations personnel, as part of its commitment to inclusivity. Conducted in September and October 2024, this training ensures that employees are prepared to assist passengers with hidden disabilities respectfully and efficiently.

The program aims to enhance the travel experience for all passengers, ensuring comfort and support throughout their time at the airport. Whether a passenger needs help with navigation, security procedures, or other aspects of their journey, trained staff are ready to provide assistance tailored to each individual’s needs.

Conclusion

Aruba Airport addition to the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Network marks a key milestone in making air travel more inclusive. By focusing on better accessibility for disabled passengers, the airport sets a new standard for inclusivity in the travel industry. This initiative ensures that all passengers, regardless of ability, enjoy a positive and accessible experience at AUA Airport.
