ARUBA STRENGTHENS COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY: ARUBA AIRPORT RECEIVES “GREEN GLOBE CERTIFICATION” TWO YEARS IN A ROW

After becoming the first airport in the world to receive the “Green Globe Certification” last year, the Aruba Airport Authority N.V. (AAA) received the gratifying news that the Queen Beatrix International Airport (Aruba Airport) has received its second Green Globe Certification on October 2, 2023. The pillar of AAA’s sustainability is integrated into every decision they make for future projects.

The certifications are an important tool to verify if the company’s efforts truly result in more sustainable operations, have an impact on the country’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and contribute to a better world.

In 2023, AAA underwent a desktop-based audit conducted by an independent assurance auditor to once again achieve the Green Globe certification. This is one of the leading certification programs in sustainable travel and tourism operations and management worldwide, and AAA is very proud to continue strengthening its sustainable efforts through the highest certification standards.

This year’s audit included a total of 56 criteria focusing on sustainable management, socio-economic factors, cultural heritage, and the environment. AAA has implemented additional Greenhouse Gas emissions reports (GHG), including all business-related travel, continuous monitoring, and updated management. Additionally, AAA’s Wings of Hope has executed various annual community projects based on the United Nations’ SDGs, with the goal of making a positive impact in the community.

Birte Pelayo, CEO of Green Globe, congratulated Aruba Airport Authority N.V. for the certification, stating: “As the only certified airport in Green Globe sustainability, we see Aruba Airport Authority N.V. (AAA) as a leader internationally and in the Caribbean. Whether it is through their recent organization of the Global SDG Action Week or their commitment for all ground equipment to operate with non-fossil fuel energy by 2030, AAA contributes to the vision and action for their commitment to achieve significant environmental and social improvements.”

“It is our responsibility as an airport to lead by example and minimize our environmental impact by making more sustainable decisions in our decision-making processes, our operations, and encouraging the airport community to be more involved in community projects that have a positive impact on Aruba,” stated Christine Kaarsbaan-Leo, Sustainability & Health Manager at AAA.

Angeline Flemming, Director of Health, Safety, and Sustainability at AAA, expressed: “The airport is committed to continuously improving our operations, encouraging our staff and partners to drive more sustainable initiatives and collectively becoming the leading airport in the region known for our sustainable efforts. AAA is proud to achieve the Green Globe Certification for the second year, and this is a testament to the hard work as a team.”
