Celebrating 65 Years of Dedicated Government Service in Aruba

Aruba recently celebrated the 65th anniversary of its Auxiliary Government Offices, or Hulpbestuurskantoor (HBK). Founded with the vision of bringing essential government services closer to residents, these offices have made it easier for citizens across Aruba to access necessary services locally.

A Brief History of Aruba’s Auxiliary Government Offices

Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes spoke at the anniversary celebration at MFA Savaneta. She highlighted the origin and purpose of HBK. The primary goal was to offer Arubans convenient access to government services. This reduced the need for long-distance travel.

Construction of the first HBK building began in 1956. The San Nicolas branch opened on December 1, 1959. This initial office reduced travel to Playa significantly. It provided much-needed relief to residents and main offices alike.

Growth of HBKs Across Aruba

Over the years, HBK expanded by adding new offices in Savaneta in 1982. It opened another office in Santa Cruz in 1983 and in Paradera in 1997. This growth improved government accessibility across various districts. Citizens could conduct public business closer to home.

HBK offices also offered space for other essential services. In 1959, the Public Library relocated to the HBK building in San Nicolas. Later, the tax office moved there as well.

Embracing the Digital Age

As we move into the digital era, HBK is evolving to digitize government processes, making services more accessible to Aruba’s citizens. Importantly, HBKs will continue to support those who need extra assistance. On-site staff will be available to guide individuals lacking internet access or computer skills, ensuring all citizens benefit from these digital upgrades.

HBK’s Role in Enhancing Community Access to Government Services

HBK has long been a pillar in Aruba’s government service network. With each new office opening, the government aimed to create a more connected, accessible environment for its citizens. This mission continues today, with HBK striving to meet the needs of a diverse population. From simplifying access to government resources to providing local convenience, the Auxiliary Government Offices have become integral to community life in Aruba.

Conclusion

Aruba’s Auxiliary Government Offices, established over six decades ago, remain committed to serving citizens effectively. With digitization and community support, these offices are well-prepared for the future, ensuring government services stay accessible to all.
