Aruba Moves Toward Sustainable Energy with EU Support
The European Union (EU) has allocated €190,000 to support Aruba’s energy transition. Announced by demissionary Minister of Economic Affairs Geoffrey Wever, the funds will accelerate Aruba’s move toward electric vehicles. An international public tender for the project is now open for applications until September 16. This initiative marks a significant step in Aruba’s commitment to sustainability.
Aruba Energy Transition: Key Developments
EU’s Role in Aruba’s Energy Transformation
The Aruba energy transition project, backed by €190,000 from the EU, aims to drive the adoption of electric vehicles across the island. The Ministry of Economic Affairs is leading this initiative, which forms part of Aruba’s broader plan to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable practices. The move aligns with the global shift toward greener technologies, reducing the island’s dependency on fossil fuels.
Minister Wever confirmed that Aruba’s transition to electric vehicles is already underway. As part of this shift, the Department of Economic Affairs (Dezhi) has received four electric cars, replacing traditional fuel-powered vehicles. Moreover, Aruba’s local energy company, Elmar, has partnered with the government to install charging stations at Sun Plaza, where Dezhi is located.
The Role of Green Overseas in Aruba’s Future
The Aruba energy transition project has received significant backing from the EU’s GO-Facility (Green Overseas) program. This initiative, funded by the EU and executed by Expertise France, focuses on sustainable development for overseas European territories. Minister Wever’s request for technical support has been approved, paving the way for a comprehensive plan to enhance Aruba’s energy sector.
Benefits of the Aruba Energy Transition
Reducing Costs and Emissions
One of the primary goals of this public tender is to regulate energy prices at the macro-economic level. By reducing operational costs and decreasing vehicle emissions, Aruba aims to improve the quality of life for its residents. Minister Wever emphasized that the shift to electric vehicles will positively impact climate control, environmental protection, and overall sustainability.
Public Tender for Energy Market Reform
The international public tender, now open, seeks companies capable of delivering solutions that will advance Aruba’s energy market reforms. This move towards price regulation and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions aligns with the country’s commitment to a cleaner, greener future.
