Legalization of undocumented workers could generate revenue in Aruba

Legalizing Undocumented Workers in Aruba Could Boost Economy

During a meeting of the Plataforma Pais with SVB, one of the key topics discussed was the Legalizing or legalization of undocumented workers in Aruba. According to Otmar Oduber, this issue could significantly impact the island’s economy, potentially generating an additional 50 million Florin.

Undocumented Workers Costing Aruba Millions

Oduber highlighted that approximately 10,000 undocumented individuals currently live and work on the island. These people hold jobs, have families, and homes but do not contribute to important systems like AZV or AOV. As a result, Aruba loses millions in potential contributions, with reports estimating a loss of 50 million Florin annually due to their undocumented status.

Benefits of Legalizing Undocumented Workers

Legalizing these undocumented individuals under controlled conditions could bring numerous benefits to the island. For example, requiring them to undergo integration processes like inburgering could help them contribute to government revenues and social and medical funds.

This coordinated legalization would ensure that these individuals, who are already an integral part of the workforce, can actively contribute to Aruba’s economy. The move could relieve the financial strain on public funds and provide new revenue streams to support essential services.
