Over 5,000 Traffic Accidents Recorded in Aruba in 2024

In 2024, Aruba saw a staggering 5,667 traffic accidents, including eight fatalities. This alarming trend prompted local authorities to intensify traffic safety campaigns, as the number of accidents remains a major concern for both residents and visitors.

Alarming Traffic Accident Statistics in Aruba

According to data released by Forensys, over 5,000 traffic accidents occurred across the island, with the majority taking place on L.G. Smith Boulevard, a hotspot for road incidents. The data indicates that 75.83% of these accidents were due to inattention while driving.

Key Traffic Safety Measures in 2024

In response to the high accident rate, the Minister of Justice and Social Affairs, Rocco Tjon, launched a national road safety awareness campaign in March 2024. The campaign focuses on raising awareness about the dangers of distracted driving, including using mobile phones while driving, which increases the risk of accidents by 23 times.

High-ranking officials, including Chief Commissioner Ramon Arnhem and Deputy Chief Commissioner Robert Candelaria, decided to increase police visibility and deploy additional traffic units to address the situation more effectively.

Road Safety Awareness in Aruba

The website TraficoSigur.aw plays a vital role in educating the public about road safety in Aruba. The site provides resources on topics such as the risks of driving under the influence and using mobile phones while driving. It also highlights the importance of wearing seat belts and following speed limits to prevent accidents.

Traffic Accident Prevention Campaigns

The prevention campaign, “No More Traffic Deaths,” was launched early in the year after six fatal accidents were reported. Chief Commissioner Arnhem emphasized the devastating impact these accidents have on families and urged all road users to follow traffic laws and stay vigilant.

“Every fatal accident is one too many. We must work together to ensure the safety of everyone on the road,” Arnhem stated.

Key Statistics from Traffic Data

In 2022, L.G. Smith Boulevard recorded the highest number of traffic incidents, with 7,341 accidents. Of those, 55.90% involved male drivers, while 35.70% were female. Young adults aged 26 to 35 were the most common age group involved in accidents. Toyota was the brand most frequently involved, with 2,123 accidents reported that year.

Consequences of Distracted and Impaired Driving

Using a mobile phone while driving is strictly prohibited in Aruba. Drivers caught using their phones while driving can face fines of up to 10,000 florins or a maximum prison sentence of three months. Driving under the influence also carries severe penalties, with fines reaching up to 25,000 florins or a two-year prison sentence, depending on the blood alcohol content level.

Alcohol and Driving: A Dangerous Combination

Consuming alcohol significantly impairs brain function, reasoning, and muscle coordination, which are crucial for safe driving. Even a small amount of alcohol can affect a driver’s abilities, making it important to avoid drinking when planning to drive. Police enforce strict penalties for drunk driving, using breathalyzers and blood tests to monitor drivers suspected of being under the influence.

Traffic Safety: A Shared Responsibility

Both drivers and pedestrians share the responsibility for maintaining road safety. The Traffic Safety Commission has shared important tips for all road users to stay alert and cautious. Road safety is a community effort, and by working together, everyone can contribute to a safer environment for both locals and tourists.
