Natural Bridge in Aruba before its collapse in 2005

19 Years After the Collapse of Aruba’s Natural Bridge

It has been 19 years since the unexpected collapse of Aruba’s Natural Bridge, once one of the island’s most famous and photographed landmarks. Located between the Bushiribana Gold Mine ruins and Andicuri Beach, the bridge was a must-see attraction before its sudden fall on September 2, 2005.

The History of Aruba’s Natural Bridge

Aruba’s Natural Bridge, standing 7.6 meters high and 30 meters long, was the largest of its kind in the Caribbean. Carved out by centuries of powerful waves and strong winds, this coral limestone formation attracted thousands of visitors each year. Tourists and locals alike walked across the stunning structure, making it a symbol of Aruba’s natural beauty.

Why Did the Natural Bridge Collapse?

At the time of the Natural Bridge collapse in Aruba, the exact cause was unclear. However, several years before, a crack was noticed on one side of the bridge. As a result, the bridge’s stability was compromised. According to former Tourism Minister Edison Briesen, “It was a very sad day for Aruba and its tourism. The bridge appeared in nearly every promotional flyer, attracting more visitors than any other attraction on the island.” The sudden loss was felt deeply by locals and visitors alike.

Other Natural Bridges in Aruba

While the collapse of Aruba’s Natural Bridge was devastating, there is good news. The island is home to several other natural bridges, though some are harder to reach. Just next to the site of the original collapse, there is a smaller natural bridge that remains intact. Although less well-known, these formations still offer breathtaking views and a glimpse into the island’s geological history.
