Sanitation Efforts Begin at Parkietenbos Dump Site
The long-awaited sanitation efforts at Parkietenbos dump have officially begun, marking a critical step in transforming the closed dump into a safer and more sustainable space. The closure of the Parkietenbos dump, once a symbol of unsustainable waste practices, signals a new era of responsible waste management in Aruba. With ongoing remediation plans, the site will be repurposed to benefit both the environment and the community.
The Future of Parkietenbos Dump
Steps Towards Sanitation and Rehabilitation
Since its closure on December 31, 2022, the sanitation efforts at Parkietenbos dump have focused on stopping the inflow of waste and preparing the site for future rehabilitation. Waste management has since shifted to responsible companies like Ecotech FZ, where household and commercial waste is handled. Green waste, construction debris, and metal are directed to other specialized firms to ensure environmentally safe disposal.
Environmental Measures for Parkietenbos Dump
Remediation and Environmental Permits
The first significant step in the sanitation efforts at Parkietenbos dump was applying for an environmental permit, submitted on March 15, 2023. While the Ministry awaits approval, sanitation work remains on hold. The goal is to ensure the site is properly prepared for remediation, with strict safety standards to prevent any long-term environmental impact.
In addition, monitoring wells will be installed to measure methane gas levels, subsurface conditions, and potential contamination risks, such as leaks into nearby seas.
Safe Handling of Hazardous Materials
As part of the ongoing remediation, a new asbestos cell is being constructed to safely store hazardous materials. Inspections revealed 27 containers of asbestos that require careful handling to protect public health. The project will follow a comprehensive Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) plan, drafted with experts from Witteveen + Bos, to ensure all safety protocols are strictly adhered to.
