For several years, Aruba has not seen a period of substantial rainfall. The usual heavy showers that sometimes occur are not enough to fill our reservoirs. Instead, there have been sporadic rainfalls, with some areas like San Nicolas receiving more rain compared to others like Santa Cruz. This inconsistency in rainfall has left many reservoirs critically low.

The Effects of Prolonged Dryness on Agriculture

The prolonged dryness has severely affected the soil, which absorbs minimal rainfall. This results in the reservoirs not holding much water. Similar issues have been observed globally, such as in parts of Mexico where droughts have persisted for years, severely impacting agriculture. The primary sector in Aruba is also feeling the strain, potentially exacerbated by climate change.

Steps to Manage Water Scarcity

To address the current water crisis in Aruba, we need to be more conscious of our water usage. For instance, if you usually request three truckloads of water, consider reducing it to two. This adjustment will help in distributing water more effectively among all farmers and extend its availability.

Several reservoirs, like those in Noord and Cas Ariba, have nearly emptied. Some areas have seen the growth of grass due to mud accumulation, which complicates maintenance. Ensuring efficient irrigation systems and preventing leaks in pipes are crucial to managing the remaining water supply.

Call for Sustainable Water Management

We appeal to the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries Santa Rosa to continue supporting local farmers by sharing the limited water resources available.
