Persistent Power Outages in Aruba: Causes and Ongoing Issues
Aruba faces persistent power outages, affecting residents across the island. ELMAR and expert investigations point to ongoing challenges and risks.
Frequent Power Interruptions Affect Residents Across Aruba
Power outages have become a recurring issue in Aruba, with residents experiencing disruptions almost every month. This week, power was interrupted on two separate days in different districts, leaving citizens without electricity during the hot season.
Recent Outages in Lagoville and Ponton Districts
On Thursday morning, residents of the Lagoville area in San Nicolas were left without power due to a distribution issue at a power station in Savaneta. The outage began just after midnight, caused by an underground cable failure that affected the station. A similar incident occurred the following morning in the Ponton area. At 6:13 AM, ELMAR reported a distribution problem affecting the neighborhood due to a faulty component in a local power station. By 8:22 AM, power was partially restored in Tanki Flip, with full restoration completed by 1:50 PM after extensive repairs.
ELMAR’s Response to Ongoing Electrical Issues
The outage began just after midnight, caused by an underground cable failure that affected the station. ELMAR NV’s technicians worked swiftly to repair the cable, restoring power to all customers by 1:58 AM.
Expert Investigation Reveals Underlying Risks
Since the beginning of this year, the frequency of power outages has increased. Given the severity of the situation, experts from Washington-based MPR have been called to investigate. Their findings indicate that equipment failures pose the most significant risk to the island’s power supply.
MPR’s Findings and Future Outlook for Aruba’s Power Grid
MPR experts highlighted that the reliability of Aruba’s power grid has not deteriorated overnight, and it will take time to address these issues.
The investigation’s results suggest that while the situation is critical and requires immediate action, delays are expected due to various factors. Unfortunately, residents are likely to continue experiencing power outages for some time.
